I’m visible

Sinful Sunday

Bee pinching their nipple with her nails painted with the Bi flag colours

It’s Bi Visibility Day on 23rd September and each year I like to do a little something to make myself visible.

This year I thought it would be fun to have the bi flag painted on my nails. Knowing I would never be able to do something that tricky myself, I took myself off to a nail bar and had my first set of false nails.

I had no idea it would take so long…two hours people, two hours!

However, it gave me time to do nothing and just let them do their thing as I sat back and drank lots of tea whilst chatting.

The conversations I had were eye opening. I live in a sex positive bubble and forget not everyone is as open or understanding. Some of the conversations and things people said made me cringe and some things just horrified me about the lack of understanding.

The first conversation I had was about bisexuality. I spent about half an hour dispelling myths of mind changing and greediness. I think it was well received with people thinking about it rather than arguing against it.

Then the conversation moved onto polyamory. This one was tougher and received far more adversity, not against people that practice it but the feelings of jealousy it would give. I had to explain how it’s not the same as bigamy and it doesn’t always involve a triad. That whilst swinging is a form of an open relationship it’s not quite the same.

All in all it was good to have these relationships with complete strangers, to be able to open people up to new ways of thinking.

I’m quite looking forward to going back and seeing where the conversation will go next time, if I can cope with these damn nails that get in the way of everything!

Two hours? Hopefully some good learning came of it. Can’t argue with your results!

  3. Your nails are lovely, I’ve never had false nails myself. Well done on having the conversations you did, 2 hours is an awful long time!

  4. A) your nails turned out fab, and b) how great is it is to be able to intro those topics and that environment. I find that outside of this community, I’m shy with who I feel comfortable discussing things with even when it comes up naturally.

  5. Love it !!!
I’ve never had conversations like this at my local . . . LOL !!!
    Fabulous . . . love this !!!

  7. Fab nails and sounds like a fab conversation too, even if it was tough going.

  8. Gorgeous nails! I know what you mean about the bubble, I can find people’s comments shocking sometimes, though some people surprise me in a positive way too.

  9. Your nails, (and nipple) are gorgeous and well done for doing your bit to open up such conversations and dispel mistruths and misunderstandings. Great shot!

This is such a good idea – as a queer person in a primary relationship with an opposite sex partner, I DO feel invisible. Those conversations are hard to have… sometimes I have the emotional bandwidth and sometimes I don’t. We all have to pick our battles (as it were), and I’m thankful you’re working to open people’s minds and hearts. xx

  11. Lovely nails and well done you for having those conversations. It can be tricky to do but sounds like you did an epic job
