After the disappointment of finding the Scottish waterfalls were merely a trickle after weeks or gorgeous sunshine rather than rain. We decided we needed to go hunting in a place that was known for BIIIIIIG waterfalls.
So off we went to Iceland, and this time we would not be beaten, even by the masses of tourist crowds!
We found wide falls, high falls, ones you could climb behind and ones you could almost touch. The best were the ones you could hear and feel the ground shake before you could see them. We even found a few on the windy days that stopped falling and went upwards (it was very windy). However, wherever we went so did the hundreds of other tourists.
And then we arrived at Goðafoss, or waterfall of the Gods. We walked right along one side of it admiring the views and grumbled about all the people. We crossed the bridge to the other side of the river and climbed down the banks to scramble across rock to get close enough to feel the icy spray and grumbled about all the people. Then we climbed back up and walked along that side of the falls and grumbled about all the people.
But then we rounded a corner and found a big rock to hide behind. There was another photographer there just packing up, so we hung around and waited for the right moment. Nobody else was coming along the path and nobody could see us from the other side. Our moment was here, we could finally get the image that had eluded us.
Sometimes chasing waterfalls is worth it!
