I have always loved surrealist art. And whilst I’m not sure if this image counts or not, it is definitely a homage to one of my favourite pieces of art. Salvador Dali’s The Great Masturbator.
As a teen I probably sniggered at the name! It is about the confusion between the purity of childhood and the development of apparently shameful sexual urges, in your brain during adolescence. And it is something that definitely resonated with me as a teen and even now as an adult I haven’t resolved some of that feeling of shame around my desires.
But one thing I am good at is masturbating, I am a proud wanker who loves discovering and connecting with their own body. And that brings me back to my love of the surreal. There are some things that awaken my body in surprising ways and when I try it again, nothing happens. Whilst sometimes that can be frustrating, it is also fascinating how bodies and brains work.

I love how this quote works perfectly. Sometimes mirrors are held up to ourselves in unexpected ways too. Maybe it’s a soul mate holding it up for us but maybe we just need to look at things from a different angle to really see what is right in front of us.
