This has been a week of celebrations because the Keeper and I became legal partners, so we are now officially Mx and Mr.
This wasn’t a wedding, it was a Civil Partnership. For those that don’t know, those were brought in by the U.K. in 2005 as a way of giving same sex couples marriage, without actually giving them marriage. That changed in 2014 when true marriage for same sex couples became legal in 2014.
However, in 2019 it became legal for opposite sex couples to have a Civil Partnership. So leap day 2020, I proposed to the Keeper. As always, he rolled his eyes and laughed at me but this time was different, this time I had a plan.
Neither one of us ever wanted marriage. A wedding and all it’s trimmings definitely isn’t for us. I also struggle with the baggage that comes with traditional marriage, the being given away to someone else. But we wanted something to make it easier to be recognised should something happen to one or the other. This seemed like the perfect work around, I would be recognised as an equal partner rather than property to own.
As we all know, a month after my proposal, COVID happened so we’ve had to wait a while. And that meant keeping it quiet for longer than I imagined. One or two people knew it was coming up, we had to book the time off work after all and we needed two witnesses. But it was so secret that not even our families know yet!
It was a truly magical day made even more magical by our witnesses. I’d like to say another big thank you to @BeauDeJour @EuclideanPoint and Honey for making the day truly fabulous and utterly filthy, I’m so glad we could share it all with you, I don’t think I’ll ever stop grinning.
Some of us were left with red and bruised arses but to mark the day for us we were marked with Mx and Mr, not new titles but more meaningful ones highlighting the new chapter of our lives. As always I barely marked but aren’t the Keepers beautiful?
